Bimini and Tiger Beach offer some of the best shark diving in the world with excellent opportunities to see not only great hammerhead and tiger sharks, but Caribbean reef, nurse, bull and lemon sharks in abundance. Several coral encrusted wrecks and healthy, vibrant reef systems make this a varied and inspiring itinerary.
The Bahamas’ 240,000 sqaure miles of ocean are home to no fewer than 40 different species of shark, and the worlds third largest barrier reef. Over the course of our trip, we will visit numerous sites throughout the Bimini island chain, as well as the world famous Tiger Beach which lays some 20 nautical miles north off the tip of Grand Bahama’s West End settlement. With both day and night diving offered, we will offer up to 5 dives a day and cover some 300 nautical miles over the pristine Bahamaian waters. Our trip will start, and finish in Freeport, Grand Bahama.
Bimini
The Western most islands of the Bahamas, 50 miles from Miami, we will dive the best of what Bimini has to offer. Bimini is perhaps most famous, in the diving world, for its aggregations of great hammerhead sharks which return year after year throughout the Bahamian winter months. Anchored off South Bimini island, we will dive with the awe inspiring great hammerhead, bull, nurse, and sometimes tiger sharks in the shallow, crystal blue waters. Guests will have the oportunity to be within arms reach of these phenominal animals, for photographers and observers alike, this will undoubtedly be a memory you’ll retain for life.
Bimini has some of the healthiest reef that the Bahamas has to offer. Sitting on the edge of the Gulf Stream, we wil explore the best of Bimini including Victory Reef, Tuna Alley, Turtle Rocks and Hawksbill Reef to name only four.
For the wreck enthusiast, we will visit possibly one of the most unique wrecks in the world, the SS Sapona, which sits in only 10’ of water, but is home to a wealth of marine life, you can expect to see scores of crab, lobster, rays and various turtle species. Steeped in history, this is one for everyone.
A deeper wreck, Bimini Barge, sits closer to 100’ is home to an array of healthy coral, eels, parrot fish, and sometimes we’ll spot a nurse shark taking some rest amongst the wreckage.
Tiger Beach
Needing little introduction, Tiger Beach is a site unlike any other in the world. You can expect to see numerous large female tiger sharks as well as bull, lemon, Caribbean reef, silky, and nurse sharks. Following extensive safety briefings, guests will be given the opportunity to dive with these amazing animals in groups of up to 8, under the supervision of our expert dive team.
Because we take the safety of our guests and crew with the utmost seriousness, our shark dives will be conducted with strict rules following a set format. Rest assured that you will be in good hands.
While Tiger Beach is known for its shark diving, there is much more to see:
Mount Olympus
A giant large underwater coral pinnacle. Visible from satellite imagry, it’s on the outer reaches of the Tiger Beach area. The peak of the coral pinnacle starts at about 18 metres (60ft) and drops off to over 450 metres (1,500ft). As a reef dive, this site is definitely one of the best dive sites in the Bahamas with awe-inspiring canyons of coral that dwarf the scuba divers. Occasionally there are hammerheads, manta rays, dolphins, turtles, and even tiger sharks cruising along the wall.
Mini Wall
‘Mini Wall’, or Shark Ledge as you may find it called in some guides, is exactly as it sounds.
A beautiful ledge that drops from around 5 metres to 21 metres (approx. 15 • 70 feet). The site is covered in a mix of healthy soft and hard coral, and is patrolled by multiple Caribbean reef and lemon sharks, with an abundance of coral fish. Occasionally, you will also see turtles and eagle rays here. You may even be lucky enough to spot one of the large great hammerheads that also visit the area.
